Honduras: Adventure, Jungle, & Beach
December 26 to January 3 - Holiday Extravaganza

Come visit the natural wonder of Honduras! Pristine coral reefs, warm tropical waters, rainforests, and rivers meandering through remote jungle areas just waiting to be explored!

*WWR down the Cangrejal River which is considered one of the best rafting in Central America.
*Hike through Pico Bonito National Park and up to the Bejuco Waterfall, an impressive 250-foot waterfall.

Friday, December 26
Depart New York / JFK early morning and arrive at San Pedro Honduras at 9.45 am
Bus Transfer to Copan - Lunch on the way
Check in at Hotel, afternoon open to explore & shop, dinner in town

Saturday, December 27
After breakfast, Guided Tour of the famous Mayan City of Copan
The Pre-Columbian city today known as Copán is a locale in extreme western Honduras, in the Copán Department, near to the Guatemalan border. It is the site of a major Maya kingdom of the Classic era (5th through 9th Centuries).

The kingdom, anciently named Xukpi (Corner-Bundle), flourished from the 5th century AD to the early 9th century, with antecedents going back to at least the 2nd century AD. Its name is an apparent reference to the fact that it was situated at the far southern and eastern end of Maya territory. The nearby modern village of Copán Ruinas itself may have anciently been known as Oxwitik.

Sunday, December 28 - Jungle Hiking El Bejuco Waterfall
After breakfast, we will transfer to La Cieba and check in at our Jungle Lodge
After check in, we will prepare for our Jungle Expedition.

We hike down to the river, with option to swim across the river or do a 20 ft. cliff jump into a deep river pool. After a short 20 min, walk in the giant riverbed of the Rio Cangrejal we begin our expedition into the jungle. The rainforest is breathtaking! Reaching the bottom of El Bejuco waterfall we enjoy our tropical picnic. On our way back we follow the Bejuco Creek and jump into a crystal clear pool and take a shower - and a therapeutic massage under the 30 ft. waterfall. Once we reach the Cangrejal river we must cross again, this time in a shallower section.

In the evening we will enjoy relaxing in a hammock or cool off in the pool.

Monday, December 29 - Rio Cangrejal River - WWR Tropical Adventure!
Heaps of class III to V rapids an exceptional whitewater rafting experience.
Rafting between giant boulders - warm waters / no wetsuits! - through the jungle on an immense riverbed in the Pico Bonito National Park! Adrenaline inducing!! The rapids are great and the scenery is overwhelming.

Tuesday, December 30 - Cacoa Lagoon
After breakfast, we’ll jump into dug-out canoes (or kayaks) and weave through a small Mangrove channel out into the Cocoa Lagoon. Paddling along the lagoons edge we can see and hear a lot of wildlife and see the local people fish from and sail their dugout canoes. Before long we enter the ‘Monkey Channel’, another narrow, overgrown channel full of mangroves. This is where most of the wildlife sightings occur. Lots of birds, bats and howler monkeys are often seen. From here we paddle to the Caribbean Sea where we get picturesque views of a serene beach and the nearby Cayos Cochinos. It is here where we have an enjoyable swim and beach picnic!

Wednesday, December 31

After breakfast, we will take the morning ferry to the Island of Roatan; to spend the next 4 days and 3 nights on a the largest of the Bay Islands.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve - Party on the Beach
Enjoy our first evening on Roatan with a festive New Year’s dinner feast.
Afterwards, party the night away at the beach and welcome the beginning of 2009 !!

Bay Islands-Roatan
Roatan is the largest and most popular of the Bay Islands. It’s about 33miles long and just 4 miles wide. A rich live reef making it a paradise for divers and snorkelers surrounds the island.

Wednesday, December 31 to Saturday, January 3

Enjoy full days of optional activities on Roatan Island!
Overnight in bungalows on West End Bay, 100m from the beach!

Optional activities include:
Snorkeling, diving, kayaking, zipline jungle canopy tour, hiking, biking, windsurfing, island tours, horseback riding on the beach, sailing, tour the island on a moped, fishing charters, dive with the dolphins, tour the Garnifuna village, visit the iguana farm, shopping, or just relaxing on the beach….

Saturday, January 3 - Last Day
At the end of the day, we will casually transfer to the airport for our 5.30 pm flight
Arrive back to NYC just after midnight.

Diving: Roatan is the healthiest reef out of all the Bay Islands!

From what we have read, the Bay Islands are taking many precautions to protect the reef. Historically, the reefs around the Bay Islands have been healthy and pristine. In 1998 the Honduran government invited the nonprofit Coral Cay Conservation to study the reef and propose solutions to sustaining it, and initiatives have now been adapted by island communities and businesses to secure the reef's health. So far, the effort is slowly working. It remains crucial-especially with even more divers expected for everyone to help preserve the coral reef.
